Most Traditional Addiction Treatment Programs Don’t Work

You wish you could quit. For good this time.

But you think one of these things:

You probably feel deep shame.

Most addiction treatment programs are grounded in guilt, shame, and control.

And here’s something you may not know: Those programs are not research-based, and they’re not effective!

In fact, 1 in 15 people are no longer sober within 1 year of completing a traditional recovery program.

Even if you can manage to find the $15,000 to $90,000 for a 90 day program and are able to completely set aside your other obligations for a 3-month period, you’re likely find yourself in a program that has:

  1. A high dropout rate, no curriculum beyond the 12 Steps, and
  2. Nothing to offer that comes from a proven research-based methodology.

These centers aren’t regulated, so once they’ve created something that sells, they can make it up as they go from there.

They micromanage your every move, remind you of your failures, and try to convince you over and over to make better choices. But it’s just not that simple.

You're not reaching for your addiction because you're somehow bad, or simply because you don't know the right choice to make.

Or because you love your habit more than you love yourself or the people around you.

You’re not trying to hurt your family. I know that. You’re not. You’re just trying to relieve some overwhelming pain you may not even allow yourself to recognize that you’re feeling.

Addiction is what happens when we look outside of ourselves to relieve distress and control our emotional state.

If our emotional state is one of pain, of course we are going to try to control it!

You’re not a bad person. And you’re not too complicated to recover.

You don’t need to be punished, shamed, or micromanaged.

You don’t need to be kicked out if you slip up.

You need understanding, and a recovery program that is scientifically proven to work. And that’s what I’ve created.

Daniel Hochman, MD

I am Daniel Hochman, MD, and I have always been fascinated about what actually causes human suffering to progress or continue. Early in my medical career, I had a patient with a severe alcohol addiction repeatedly come to the emergency room because he was suffering from painful symptoms of liver failure.

Each time I saw him, I lectured him about how he needed to quit drinking and make better choices for his health. But he didn’t, and he just kept ending up in the emergency room over an over. If I knew then what I know now, I’d realize I was just magnifying the shame he already felt and maybe even making his problem worse.

But that experience, among others, set me on a quest. I needed to find an answer to these questions:

  1. Why don’t people follow good advice?
  2. Why do they continue to harm themselves when they know better?
  3. How do people really change?

After years of research and practice in the field of recovery, I now have those answers.

I’ve helped hundreds of people recover from their addictions, whether they’re addicted to hard drugs, eating gambling, porn, alcohol, or something else. I’ve helped people through my private psychiatry practice and also through my work as a consultant for treatment centers throughout the United States.

But I wanted to help more people. Not only are there financial and geographic barriers to people seeking recovery within a treatment center, but I knew from first-hand experience that most of these facilities were not applying research-based practices that effectively helped people recover anyway!

In fact the CASA Columbia Report on Addiction Treatment found: “The vast majority of people in need of addiction treatment do not receive anything that approximates evidence-based care.”

Daniel Hochman, MD

These factors together led me to create Self Recovery: a highly effective, affordable, research-based recovery program that you can do on your own schedule anywhere you have access to Wi-Fi.

Self Recovery draws on my medical training as a physician, my psychological expertise as a psychiatrist, and research from 1,000s of studies to provide a holistic approach to addiction care that works.

After Self Recovery you will be able to:

  • Control your behaviors rather than the other way around
  • Be more connected to people you care about
  • Get time back for what you truly enjoy
  • Be more productive at work
  • Be more honest with yourself and the people in your life

After Self Recovery you will be able to get rid of:

  • The financial cost of addiction
  • The medical consequences of your addiction
  • The time you waste managing your addiction
  • Unnecessary drama
  • The guilt and shame you feel

There is a common misconception that someone must go away to rehab.

More and more studies have determined that this just isn’t true. In fact, many people in recovery actually benefit from being able to work through recovery in their own environment and on their own schedule.

The only accountability you need is accountability to yourself.

And you don’t need punishment or control from anyone. Research has continually shown us that these things are ineffective and even detrimental to recovery. Some people avoid recovery programs entirely because they are afraid or ashamed at the prospect of having to discuss their struggles with addiction in a group environment or face-to-face with a practitioner.

Self Recovery contains a forum and weekly facilitator-led online support group where you are welcome to participate but can remain 100% anonymous.

Self Recovery is a 6 Module course. It takes roughly 12 weeks to complete the Self Recovery program if you spend an hour every weekday on it, but you choose a comfortable pace. I encourage you to revisit these concepts as often as needed. Check out our curriculum and pacing guide here.
